Still wanting to homogenize my colors more, I am trying some other ideas. It seems that if I apply multiple filters and apply the Offset Filter in between, I can achieve a more fluid pattern. Here are the additional steps I took to create this one.
Step 1 - Create a new 4 inch by 4 inch file at a resolution of 300.
Step 2 - Using the Paint Bucket Tool fill this square with one of your previous 'watercolor' patterns.
Step 3 - Use the Smudge Tool and swirl around the pattern so as to obscure the repeats.
Step 4 - Now use another filter to change the pattern more and alter the colors at the same time. Filter -> Render -> Difference Clouds.
Step 5 - Now the edges of the file have been altered and it will no longer tile seamlessly so this needs to be fixed with the Offset Filter. Filter -> Other -> Offset. Since this is a 4 x 4 inch file at 300 ppi, the horizontal and vertical offsets need to be set to 600. (Divide 4 in half and then multiply by 300.)
Step 6 - Use the Smudge Tool again to remove the 'seam' lines though the horizontal and vertical centers being careful not to alter the edges.
Step 7 - Save this as a new pattern and see how it repeats in an 8 inch square.
