Pattern 79

Friday, May 1, 2015
This pattern combines one of my quilt block based patterns with one of my kaleidoscope patterns.  You don't actually see the quilt block in the final pattern.  It is simply used to make selection areas for changing the colors in the kaleidoscope layer.  Here is how I created it in Photoshop Elements.

Step 1 - Create a new two inch by two inch file.

Step 2 - Fill this with Pattern #17 from my January 25 blog post.  Use the Paint Bucket Tool with Pattern checked in the Options Bar.  Image one below.

Step 3 - Create a new layer, Layer -> New -> Layer, and fill it with Pattern #1 from my January 7 blog post.

Step 4 - On the Layers Palette, select the original background layer, and using the Magic Wand Tool, select the black parts.  You can do this in one step by having Contiguous unchecked in the Options Bar.

Step 5 - On the Layers Palette, select the kaleidoscope layer.  You should still see your selection area from the previous step.  Now alter the colors in the selected area.  Enhance -> Adjust Color -> Adjust Hue/Saturation.  See image two below.

Step 6 - Change the selection to the remaining areas.  Select -> Inverse.  Adjust the colors again.  Enhance -> Adjust Color -> Adjust Hue/Saturation.  See image three below.

Step 7 - Now add a filter to outline the colors.  Filter -> Artistic -> Poster Edges.  That finishes the pattern.  Select -> All, and Edit -> Define Pattern from Selection.  See the fourth image below.

Step 8 - The fifth image below shows the pattern filled into an eight inch square.
