For my next pattern, I started with my Pattern 22, which is a two inch pattern.  Using the Paint Bucket tool, I changed the red dots to white and the yellow dots to black.  With the grid visible, I used the Rectangular Marquee tool to select a one inch square around each of the white dots.  I used the Paint Bucket tool to fill black around both of the white dots.  I did the same for the black dots and filled white around them.  I then selected all and saved the pattern.  The images below show how the pattern looks.
